Sebastian Degenhard

Technical Management

The event industry offers countless opportunities to unleash one’s creativity. Often, entire worlds are created where set design, music, or the right lighting set the perfect ambiance and culinary accents, enabling people to come together.

It’s precisely this creative approach that excites Sebastian about his job. He loves finding new solutions to realize his clients’ wishes. “That’s what makes it so interesting for me: that from many different elements, ultimately a complete picture, something beautiful, can emerge,” he confirms.

Sebastian is highly knowledgeable in event technology. Before joining WECC, he was self-employed for 15 years, primarily in Berlin’s club and music scene. This was perfect for Sebastian, who also produces music himself. His resume resonates with Berlin’s vibe, including events at venues like Festsaal Kreuzberg, Ritter Butzke, the legendary Club Horst Krzbrg, and internationally renowned festivals like Fusion Festival in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Garbicz Festival in Poland.

In 2016, he transitioned to permanent employment with 40 SECONDS. His initial role was managing logistics in refugee accommodation at the former Berlin-Tempelhof Airport. Recognizing his skills, he was asked if he’d like to continue at WECC after the project ended. He gladly accepted! Now, he oversees technical operations at Westhafen, handling facility maintenance, coordinating and contracting external vendors, and ensuring smooth execution of all events.

Sebastian often likens his job to that of a conductor in an orchestra. “You mustn’t lose sight of the big picture, yet you can’t neglect the details either.” He delegates many tasks while maintaining an overview for the entire experience. It’s not easy when no two events are alike. Each client has unique expectations that the team customizes accordingly.

“With different clients come different tasks. Nothing here is ever the same,” Sebastian affirms. It’s precisely this diversity that makes the event industry so exciting for him. And few places are as diverse as WECC, hosting everything from conferences to gala dinners to large celebrations. Moreover, he ensures smooth operations for off-site catering events, such as hosting the mayor’s reception for the Berlin Eisbären championship at the Red City Hall.

Looking ahead, Sebastian has plans, particularly focusing on sustainability. He emphasizes reducing waste and recycling whenever possible. Additionally, the team is working towards a sustainability certification. The future promises to be just as dynamic!
